Air Separation Unit Process

 

The core process of an air separation unit (ASU) revolves around the efficient separation of air, encompassing five key steps. First, intake and compression: atmospheric air is drawn in and compressed to a pressure of 5-10 barg. This increased pressure improves subsequent cooling efficiency. Next, the purification stage utilizes molecular sieve adsorbers to remove impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons. This is crucial for preventing icing and blockage in cryogenic equipment. The purified air enters the cooling and liquefaction stage, where it is cooled to extremely low temperatures using heat exchangers and refrigeration cycles to liquefy. Distillation (rectification) is the core separation step, utilizing the boiling point differences between nitrogen (-196°C), oxygen (-183°C), and argon (-186°C) to separate the components in a distillation column. Finally, gas collection allows the separated gases to be stored and distributed as needed. In addition to the mainstream cryogenic distillation method, other methods include membrane separation (suitable for nitrogen-enriched air production), pressure swing adsorption (PSA), and vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA). Purity, recovery rate, and energy consumption must be prioritized during design and operation to maximize overall plant efficiency.

The fractionator, as the core distillation equipment in an air separation unit, performs the crucial function of air separation. It comprises core components such as the main heat exchanger, upper column (structured packing type), lower column (sieve plate type), main condenser/evaporator, crude argon column, and refined argon column. Through the distillation process, it directly produces target products such as liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid argon. It is the core of air separation and determines product yield and purity.

Feed Air Compressor (Centrifugal)
Responsible for compressing feed air to the required process pressure (inlet/outlet pressure ~0.1/0.61 MPa (A)), providing the initial air source power for the entire unit. With a processing capacity of approximately 8400 Nm³/h, it serves as the primary power source for air entering the subsequent pre-cooling, purification, and distillation systems, directly impacting the unit's air intake and stable operation. The circulating air compressor (centrifugal type) is a key component of the booster expander process. It provides high-pressure air (exhaust pressure ~2.8 MPa (A)) to drive the booster turboexpander, providing cooling capacity for the system and ensuring the establishment of a cryogenic distillation environment. With an air processing capacity of approximately 16,000 Nm³/h and a shaft power of 1,330 kW, it is crucial for maintaining cooling balance and stable operation of the system.
