Air Separation Unit (ASU): working principle and applications
A NEWTEK CO2 Air Separation Unit (ASU) is a facility specifically designed to separate carbon dioxide from other gases in the atmosphere, primarily nitrogen and oxygen. It is essential for a variety of industrial applications, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
CO2 Air Separation Unit Main Processes
- Air Compression: Ambient air is filtered to remove dust and then compressed using a multi-stage compressor. Typical delivery pressure for compressed air is about 5 bar.
- Air Purification: Before the air undergoes cryogenic separation, it is treated in a purification system that includes molecular sieve adsorbers. These adsorbers remove residual water vapor, carbon dioxide, and trace hydrocarbons that could freeze and clog the system.
- Cryogenic Distillation: The purified air is then cooled to very low temperatures, allowing the different gases to be separated based on their boiling points. This process requires a large amount of energy, which is provided by air compression.
- CO2 Removal: In the context of CO2 separation, the unit must effectively remove CO2 to prevent it from freezing in the cold box of the air separation unit. This is usually achieved by using a dedicated CO2 removal unit to ensure that the air is dry and free of CO2.
