Liquefied Natural Gas Plant Analysis of natural gas purification, classification and separation technologies
Liquefied natural gas, or LNG for short, is a specially processed form of natural gas. It is liquefied at extremely low temperatures, which greatly reduces the volume of natural gas, making it easier to transport and store over long distances. Although LNG has changed in physical form, its chemical composition remains the same as conventional natural gas, with methane as the main component. Due to its high efficiency and environmental protection, LNG has become an important part of the global energy sector and is widely used in many fields such as industry, electricity, and transportation.
What is LNG
Liquefied natural gas, or LNG for short, is a cryogenic liquid mixture formed at -162°C by a cryogenic freezing process after natural gas is pretreated to remove impurities. In this mixture, the methane content is as high as more than 96%, and it also contains ethane (4%) and a small amount of C3-C5 alkanes. The chemical composition of LNG is consistent with that of conventional natural gas, with methane as the main component, but its physical form has changed, making it easier to transport and store over long distances.
Basic properties of LNG
The properties of LNG vary slightly depending on the composition, but the characteristics of general commercial LNG are as follows: At -162°C and 0.1 MPa, LNG is a colorless, odorless, and non-corrosive liquid with a density of about 0.43 tons/cubic meter. Its ignition point is 650°C, boiling point is -162.5°C, and melting point is -182°C. The calorific value of LNG is quite high, usually reaching 37.62 MJ/cubic meter. At -162°C, its latent heat of vaporization is about 510 kJ/kg. In addition, the explosion limit of LNG is controlled between 5% and 15%, while the compression coefficient is in the range of 0.740 to 0.820.
