When LNG is stored in an insulated tank, any infiltration of external heat will cause part of the LNG to be converted into gas, which is called boil-off gas. The composition of boil-off gas is mainly affected by the original composition of LNG, and usually contains about 20% nitrogen (about 20 times the nitrogen content in LNG), 80% methane, and trace amounts of ethane. It is worth noting that for pure methane LNG, the density of boil-off gas below -113°C is higher than that of air; and for methane LNG containing 20% ​​nitrogen, the density of boil-off gas below -80°C is also higher than that of air.

 

Overflow and diffusion of LNG


When LNG is accidentally dumped on the ground, it boils and evaporates rapidly and violently. The evaporation rate of this process will gradually decrease until it reaches a stable value. In this process, the boil-off gas forms a stable laminar flow along the ground, which continuously absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, thereby gradually rising and diffusing. At the same time, because the boil-off gas cools the surrounding ambient air to below the dew point, a distinct cloud will form. This cloud not only provides a visual guide to the direction of LNG vapor movement, but also indicates whether the vapor-air mixture is flammable.

 

LNG combustion and explosion characteristics


LNG, as a type of natural gas, is also flammable and explosive. At a low temperature of -162°C, its explosion range is limited to 5% to 15% by volume. It is worth noting that the ignition point of LNG varies depending on the component, especially as the content of heavy hydrocarbons increases, its ignition point decreases accordingly. Taking pure methane as an example, its ignition temperature is as high as 650°C.
