Insulation form selection for liquid oxygen pipelines
For deep cold environments, the following three insulation forms are commonly used:
- Foam glass insulation material: The recommended operating temperature range is -196~400℃.
- Pearl sand filling insulation form: The operating temperature range is -200~800℃.
- Vacuum jacketed pipe (VJP) insulation form: Since the theoretical heat conduction capacity of vacuum is zero, its cold loss is only heat radiation, so its cold insulation capacity is strong. And its outer pipe insulation is in vacuum form, and the design thickness required for its insulation is much thinner than that of solid insulation materials, which is more convenient for pipeline space utilization and construction. However, the cost of vacuum pipelines is high, and where there are pipeline branches, the need for custom fittings will greatly increase the economic cost.
Cryogenic oxygen production is the mainstream air separation process today. The insulation design of liquid oxygen pipelines involves the selection of insulation forms, insulation structure design, and insulation support design of low-temperature pipelines, which is an important measure for the efficient collection of produced liquid oxygen products. NEWTEK introduced the construction process of vacuum jacketed pipe (VJP) and pearl sand insulation filling through analysis of supplier documents and combined with the problems encountered in actual construction. For the insulation of cryogenic pipelines in air separation units, it is recommended to use a design method that combines vacuum jacketed pipes with pearl sand insulation filling to improve the cold insulation efficiency of pipelines.
